The mansion sits inside the letters.

The first word runs across the top in tall black display type, the second answers it below in the same face, and ENTRANCE sits small and widely spaced at the foot. Between them a Victorian mansion rises in silhouette — steep roofs, a central tower with a pointed cap, dormers and finials, every window black.

Bare trees lean in from both sides and bats scatter across the sky around the tower. The ground is aged cream, stained brown around the edges and blotched with rust that runs in from the corners and down the border rule. Two curls of flourish close the bottom. It is built to look like a hundred-year-old enamel plate left out in the weather, on a smooth flat panel with a hole at each corner.

Tall and narrow, so it suits a door, a basement stairwell, or the strip of wall beside a light switch. It works as a permanent fixture in a horror room rather than only in October. A gift for someone whose film shelf runs to old asylums and older houses.
