The compost heap has a skull.

A mound of dark soil rises behind the lettering, and the panel sits in a green-grey wash that goes almost black at the corners. TRESPASSERS runs across the top in tall cream capitals, WILL BE sits beneath it, and COMPOSTED lands at the bottom on a pale metal plate.

All the tools are in the soil. A trowel and a garden fork stand upright at the sides, next to two galvanized buckets, a small bin marked COMPOST, plant pots and a few seedlings. Look closer and the ground is moving: worms, grubs, a centipede, a beetle, and a bone-white skull half buried right below the word BE. Broad green leaves fill the lower corners. Rust runs heavy around all four edges, printed on rather than earned.

Landscape shape, and it belongs outside under cover on the allotment gate, the shed, or the fence beside the vegetable beds. It reads as a joke first and a boundary second. A gift for the gardener whose sense of humor runs very dry.
