The left half is a crescent moon in profile, gold over antique silver, its face calm and its edge overrun with scrollwork, tiny spirals and a rosette set at the brow. The right half belongs to a sun: a round gold face with closed eyes and long flame rays, floating in a field of deep blue currents that curl like water. Two small compass discs sit in the blue. A dark navy rim closes the circle and keeps the two halves locked together, one warm and one cold.
Look at it side on and all that carving flattens out: the gold highlights and the shadow in every curl are printed onto a smooth panel. On the hook it weighs almost nothing.
