The pumpkin grins, the cat doesn't.

A black cat sits upright and square in the centre, front paws together on a branch, tail curled around behind them. The fur is painted in wet-looking clumps and spikes rather than smooth pile, and the ears are lined with rust orange. Its eyes are flat gold with narrow pupils and they look right out of the panel, giving away nothing.

Twisted grey branches close in from both sides, hung with orange maple leaves and others caught mid-fall. A cobweb stretches across the upper left, a small bird perches high, and one bat crosses above the cat's ears. Bottom left sits a carved jack-o'-lantern with a wide lit grin, a smaller uncut pumpkin at the far right. The ground behind is mottled slate and teal, printed to look like carved relief.

It works on a front hall wall from September, or propped on a mantel between real gourds. The colours are autumn rather than neon Halloween, so it can stay up through Samhain and into November. An easy gift for anyone with a black cat of their own.
