An oval cartouche, all of it black: acanthus leaves curl outward from the rim in pierced scrolls, wide at the sides, drawn to a point top and bottom. Inside sits a dished oval field, and rising out of it is a skull in deep relief, upper teeth showing, the browline sharp, fine hatched lines running back over the cranium.

Seen from an angle the skull stands well clear of the panel and throws its own shadow across the oval. Straight on it flattens into something closer to a mourning cameo, and the leaves read as one solid black outline against a light wall.
