A wolf's head fills the centre of a wide panel, facing straight out, ruff bristling. The fur is worked in long strokes of graphite and black, and the eyes are the only pale points in the whole design. Around it the background looks like thick paint dragged with a knife — ridges, gouges, flecks of pale grey caught in the furrows — all held in the same charcoal range. There is no colour anywhere on it. The panel is wider than it is tall, so the ruff runs almost edge to edge.

That heavy sculpted surface is printed onto flat aluminium, so what looks like an inch of built-up paint is a smooth sheet you can wipe down with a cloth.
