One witch, seen from the side, leans in over a round-bellied cauldron and stirs with a long thin rod. Her hat brim sweeps back into her hair, which runs off the right edge of the disc in heavy carved waves, and her sleeve falls in deep folds across the pot.

The whole scene is silver-grey: a huge cratered moon behind her left shoulder, low cloud, two gnarled trees at the sides, small pumpkins and mushrooms along the bottom rim. The only color is the fire, orange flames licking up over a neat stack of split logs beneath the cauldron. Grain, shadow and relief are printed onto a flat aluminium circle.

Hang it in a kitchen, above a stove or beside a spice shelf, where the fire tones pick up copper pans. It carries October easily and still looks right in January. Good for the person who actually simmers their own tinctures and syrups instead of buying them. It is a quiet piece for all its subject matter.
