A sun face and a crescent moon face overlap in the centre, both in profile, both gold, one looking left and one looking right. The left half of the dial is deep cobalt, scattered with blue and gold orbs and small spirals; the right half turns rust and orange, with long wavy rays combed all the way out to the rim.

The hours are marked with pale Roman-style strokes laid straight onto the painted ground rather than a plain number set, so read the time from the hands rather than by counting the marks. The heavy relief look of the rays and the scrollwork is flat printing on a wooden face.
