A horned owl perches high on the right of the panel, body turned away and head swung back over the shoulder so one amber eye meets you. The plumage is dark olive and charcoal, feathers picked out in short gold strokes down the breast and long bars across the folded wing, talons gripping a thick bare branch.

Behind him hangs a full moon in deep amber, wide enough to fill the upper left, its craters brushed in with visible strokes. Thin bare twigs cross in front of it in every direction. The lower half of the plate falls away into olive and smoke, and the surface carries scratches, rust flecks and worn edges as part of the print.
