Baroque swirls give way to scales.

Medusa looks straight out of the panel with her chin level and her eyes open, pale green irises, freckles across the nose, coral lips. Everything above and around her face is snake: thick coils looped over her forehead, one curled into a flat spiral on her crown, more running down past her shoulders with their heads turned outward and jaws slightly open.

The whole thing is cast in verdigris, the green of old roof copper, with rose gold catching on the acanthus scrollwork behind her head and in the lower corners. Her own hair shows through the coils in grey-green strands. Where the ornament ends and the scales begin takes a second to work out. All that carved depth is printed onto a flat sheet.

It suits a hallway, a bathroom, or a room that already leans classical. Medusa gets read as a guardian at least as often as a monster, which makes this a good doorway piece and a solid gift for anyone deep in Greek myth.
