The rose is the deepest part.

A heart cut to its own outline, with no frame and no backing board. One large open rose sits just below centre, fully modelled, petal folded over petal, and out of it acanthus leaves and long scrolls sweep to both shoulders and down to the point. Smaller buds and half-open blooms are tucked into the leafwork near the top.

The edge follows the carving instead of a clean curve, so the silhouette is notched and scalloped the whole way round. It is one matte black with fine tooling lines across every leaf, and the relief is deep enough that a lamp to one side lights half the heart and leaves the rest dark.

Small and quiet next to a big plaque, so it works best in a group: over a dressing table, beside a mirror, along a stairwell. A gift for a wedding or an anniversary where a red satin heart would be wrong.
