Another three seen from behind, but this set is dressed for something formal. The left wears plum purple worked all over with raised scrollwork, the centre a black coat over a burnt orange skirt, the right a blue-violet gown with the same embroidered surface. Their hats tilt at different angles, brims wide and slightly crumpled, tips curling forward.
Behind them a golden-brown wood drops red and orange maple leaves, several caught mid-fall around the hats, and more pile up at their feet. The whole scene sits inside an ornate bronze frame of acanthus curls with rosettes at the corners, the kind you would find on an old mirror. The relief in that frame and the embroidery in the gowns are printed effects on a flat sheet.
It reads warm rather than spooky, so it can stay up from Mabon straight through the winter. Good over a mantel or a sideboard, and a fair gift for someone whose entire autumn wardrobe is already these colours.
