Three witches close a circle around a squat bronze pot with a small fire in it, and every hand is out over the heat. The left wears dusty pink, the centre a dark teal bodice, the right pale blue, and all three have long fair or copper hair falling past the elbow. The centre figure looks straight out; the other two keep their eyes on the flame.
The scene sits deep in a dark wood. A gnarled branch runs across the top carrying a sunflower and a few dry leaves, and a small pumpkin rests at the bottom left. The palette is almost all warm brown and bronze, so the fire and the three faces end up the only bright things in it. The sculpted panel look, right down to the moulding on the pot, is printed flat.
It fits a dim corner: over a bookcase, at the top of the stairs, near a working altar. Suits the last week of October, and reads as an ordinary harvest scene the rest of the year.
