A dark owl is caught with both wings fully spread, every primary feather picked out separately, talons drawn up beneath it and gold eyes fixed forward. The background is black marble scattered with gold leaves — oak, rowan, small five-petalled flowers — laid thickly enough to fill every corner. The bird is close to the only thing on the panel that is not gold. The leaves are drawn large, some of them as long as the owl's wing.

The panel is landscape rather than portrait, so it wants a wide stretch of wall. The carved, layered look is printed flat: gold ink and painted shadow, no leaf and no raised edge.
