A striped cat sits upright on a slab of rock with an open book propped against its chest, one forepaw hooked over the edge to hold it there. The pages are ruled with close lines of writing, and the cat is not looking at them — it looks straight out, amber-eyed, ears up, as if you interrupted.

The whole panel is cast in one warm bronze. Behind the cat the wall is engraved with rows of script and long ruled staves, with a few larger letters near the top worn past reading. Its fur is worked in short overlapping strokes, the tail curled forward, the stone below chipped and pitted. The depth is convincing from across the room, but the raised, carved look is printed onto a flat sheet with holes at the corners.
