Yule Candle Magic: Colours, a Blessing and How to Keep a Solstice Vigil
Strip Yule of everything modern and what is left is a fire kept burning through the longest night. The log, the candle in the window, the lamp on the altar: all of them are the same act, which is to hold light until the sun comes back. Candle magic at the solstice is not a technique layered on the festival. It is the festival.
This guide gives you the colours and what they are for, a blessing you can say without feeling foolish, and a realistic plan for a vigil on the night of 20 to 21 December 2026.
Colours for the solstice
Colour correspondences vary between traditions and none of them are ancient, so treat these as sensible defaults rather than law. Our colour magic guide covers the general system.
Gold and yellow
The returning sun. The central candle of the vigil, lit at dusk and kept until dawn. If you have only one candle, it is this one.
Red
The hearth, the blood, the life in the dark. Warmth and vitality through the winter. Pairs with gold on the altar.
Green
The evergreen, the life that does not die back. Continuity. A green candle among real fir or holly is the oldest picture of the season.
White
Snow, clarity, the clean slate of the new year. Also the all-purpose substitute if you lack a colour.
Black
The longest night itself. Some practitioners burn a black candle down before lighting the gold one, to honour the dark before turning to the light. This is a modern practice and a good one.
The candles themselves
Candles that burn through a vigil
For a vigil you need burn time, which means pillars or jar candles rather than tapers. For an altar you want something with presence. The ritual candles are scented jar candles with a crystal set in the top and a tarot card on the label, which makes choosing easier: the Sun for the central candle, the Star for hope through the dark, the Moon for the night itself, the Empress for the hearth. A Yule blessing
Say it over the central candle at dusk on the solstice eve. It does not rhyme and it is not meant to be beautiful. It is meant to be said.
This is the longest night. I light this flame against it, as people have always done, and I keep it until morning. What was heavy this year, let it burn down with the dark. What I carry forward, let it warm by this light. The sun turns tonight. So do I.

The vigil
The traditional observance is to stay awake through the longest night and greet the sun. Most people who try it fall asleep at two. Here is a version that works.
Dusk, roughly 4 pm
Light the central candle. Say the blessing. Light the black candle if you are using one. Eat properly; a vigil on an empty stomach is a nap.
Evening
Ordinary evening, with the candle burning where you can see it. Read, talk, cook, wrap gifts. Do not sit staring at it; the point is that it is lit, not that you are watching.
Midnight
The hinge of the night. Light a second candle from the first, gold or white. Speak the one thing you want from the coming year. This is the moment most practitioners treat as the working itself. Our Norse Yule piece describes the oath sworn on the Yule boar, which is the older form of exactly this.
The small hours
Sleep if you need to, with the candle in a safe holder or replaced by a battery pillar. A vigil is kept by the flame, not by your eyelids. Set an alarm for twenty minutes before sunrise.
Dawn, roughly 7.30 am
Go outside or to an east window. Watch the sun come up. Say thank you, to whoever you say it to. Snuff the candles. Eat something sweet. That is the vigil.
The candle in the window
If a full vigil is not possible, the oldest fallback is a single candle in a window facing the road, lit at dusk on the solstice and left until bedtime. It was a signal to travellers and to the returning sun alike, and it needs no altar. A battery candle is fine; the gesture is the thing.
Candles for the twelve nights
If the vigil is the centre of the festival, the twelve nights after it are the tail, and a candle a night is the simplest way to keep them. Light one at dusk each evening from 21 December to 1 January, the same candle if it will last, and let it burn for an hour. Some practitioners assign a theme to each night, a person to honour or a quality to invite; others simply light it and sit. The second group is not doing it wrong. The point of the twelve nights was always rest in the dark, and a candle that asks nothing of you is the right kind of company for that.
Safety, because it matters
Jar candles on a heat-proof surface, away from evergreen, which is dry and burns fast. Never a naked flame on a tree skirt or a cloth. Snuff rather than blow, to keep the wick. If you fall asleep, the candle should be one you would be happy to leave in an empty room, or it should be electric.
