Tarot Birth Card Calculator: How to Find Your Birth Card by Hand
Searches for tarot birth cards have been climbing all year, and most of the calculators online give you an answer without showing the working. That is a pity, because the method is simple, takes less than a minute with a pen, and understanding it tells you more than the result does. This guide shows the sum, gives worked examples, explains the card pairs, and adds a second calculation for your card of the year.
Where birth cards come from
The modern birth card system was popularised by the tarot writer Mary K. Greer in the 1980s. It uses numerology to link your birthday to the Major Arcana, the twenty-two trump cards numbered 0 to 21. The idea is that your birth card describes a lifelong theme: not a fate, but a lesson or quality you will keep meeting. Like much of modern tarot it is an interpretive tool rather than an ancient doctrine, and it is best used as a mirror.
How to calculate your birth card

Step 1: add your birthday as three numbers
Write the month, the day and the full year as numbers and add them. For a birthday of 22 July 1988 that is 7 + 22 + 1988 = 2017.
Step 2: add the digits of the total
2 + 0 + 1 + 7 = 10.
Step 3: keep going while the number is above 21
10 is already 21 or under, so it is a card: 10 is the Wheel of Fortune.
Step 4: reduce once more for the pair
Add the digits of 10 to get 1: The Magician. Your birth cards are the Wheel of Fortune and The Magician. The first is the outer theme, the second the inner one.
Common mistakes
Adding the digits of the year one at a time before the sum, then adding the month and day, gives the same final single digit but can skip past a valid two-digit card, so add month, day and full year first. Writing the day before the month makes no difference to the total, but writing a two-digit year does: always use all four digits.
Two more worked examples
Born 3 March 2005
3 + 3 + 2005 = 2011. Then 2 + 0 + 1 + 1 = 4. The Emperor. When the first reduction lands on a single digit, you have one birth card rather than a pair.
Born 15 November 1979
11 + 15 + 1979 = 2005. Then 2 + 0 + 0 + 5 = 7. The Chariot, as a single card.
A total of 22
If your digits add to exactly 22, most readers count that as The Fool, whose card is numbered 0 but is sometimes treated as 22. Reduced, 22 gives 4, The Emperor, so the pair is The Fool and The Emperor.
The birth card pairs
Every total from 10 to 21 reduces to a second card, giving a pair. One of them, 19, reduces twice, which makes it the only three-card set.

This uses the Rider-Waite-Smith numbering, where Strength is 8 and Justice is 11. If you read with a Marseille-style deck the two are swapped, so check which order your deck uses before you read your pair.
What your pair means
Read the higher card as how the theme shows up in the world and the lower card as where it comes from inside you. A Death and Emperor pair, for example, often describes someone who builds structures and then has to learn when to let them end. A Star and Strength pair points at hope that has to be held with patience. Your card of the year
The same sum gives you a card for any year. Replace your birth year with the current year. For a 22 July birthday in 2027: 7 + 22 + 2027 = 2056, then 2 + 0 + 5 + 6 = 13, which is Death, reducing to 4, The Emperor. Read it as the theme of the twelve months from that birthday. Many people use it at the start of the year or at Samhain, the pagan new year.
Your zodiac card
A second, older way to link yourself to the Major Arcana comes from the Golden Dawn, the occult order whose teaching shaped the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. Each sun sign has a card: Aries The Emperor, Taurus The Hierophant, Gemini The Lovers, Cancer The Chariot, Leo Strength, Virgo The Hermit, Libra Justice, Scorpio Death, Sagittarius Temperance, Capricorn The Devil, Aquarius The Star and Pisces The Moon. How do I calculate my tarot birth card?
