Christmas Stockings for a Gothic or Witchy Mantel: Design, Colour and Hanging
The Christmas stocking is a strange survivor. It is the only piece of holiday decor almost every household still uses, and almost nobody has changed it since the 1950s: red felt, white cuff, a name in glitter. Which is why a black stocking with a moon phase down the front stops people at the door. It is not that it is gothic. It is that it is the first stocking they have looked at properly in years.

Filling them
This is the part everyone forgets until the last minute. Witchy stockings want witchy contents, and small ones. Matching the rest of the mantel
Stockings do not hang in isolation. Above them, a mirror in a carved frame doubles the candlelight; the gothic frames range from plain baroque to skull-arched. Along the shelf, real evergreen, two or three candles at different heights, and one object with weight in the middle. Below, if there is a hearth, a dark rug or a stack of logs. The stockings should be the darkest vertical elements and the candles the brightest points; everything else sits between. If the mantel is already busy, take something off before adding stockings. No mantel?
Hang them from a shelf bracket, a curtain rod, the end of a bookcase, or a length of dark ribbon along a wall with the stockings pinned at intervals. A few of the designs deserve a word because they read differently at a distance.
