Four of Pentacles Tarot Card Meaning: Holding On, Saving and Letting Some Go
Share
The Four of Pentacles shows a crowned man sitting outside a city with four coins. He clutches one to his chest, balances one on top of his crown and keeps one under each foot. He is not going anywhere, and neither are his coins. It is one of the most easily read cards in the deck. You can see the grip.
The card is not simply about greed. Building security is sensible, and saving is a skill. The trouble starts when the hold gets so tight that you cannot move, share or receive anything new. This guide covers the imagery, the upright and reversed meanings, love, work and money, the yes or no answer and some ways to hold things more lightly.

What is on the Four of Pentacles card
In the 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith deck, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith, a crowned man in a long cloak sits on a stone block. He wraps both arms around a large pentacle held against his chest. A second pentacle rests on top of his crown, and two more lie flat under his feet. Behind him, at a distance, are the roofs and towers of a city. Waite's own note was short: he holds to that which he has.
- The coin at his chest is guarded closely. It also blocks his heart.
- The coin on his crown suggests thinking that is ruled by money and status.
- The coins under his feet keep him planted. He cannot walk without letting go.
- The crown shows real authority and achievement. He earned what he has.
- The city behind him is the world of trade and people, and he has his back to it.
In the Golden Dawn system the Four of Pentacles is the Sun in Capricorn, the Lord of Earthly Power. The Sun gives confidence and Capricorn wants lasting structure, which makes for solid achievement and a strong wish to protect it.
Four of Pentacles upright meaning
Earth stones for a looser grip
Upright, the Four of Pentacles says you are building security. You may be saving, paying off debt, protecting your time or keeping a firm hand on your resources. That is often wise, and the card does not ask you to stop.
It does ask you to check the grip. Are you holding on because it makes sense, or because letting go of anything feels frightening? Do not hold so tight that nothing new can enter. Money that never moves cannot grow, and a person who never shares rarely receives much back.
The city behind him is worth a second look. Trade, friendship and new chances all live there, and he has turned his back on them to guard what he already owns. The card asks whether your safety has started to cost you connection.
Keywords: security, saving, control, stability, caution, possessiveness.
Four of Pentacles reversed meaning
Reversed, the hands open. The card's advice is to loosen your hold, because generosity creates flow. This can be a healthy release: spending on something that matters, giving freely, letting a plan change, or trusting someone else with part of the work.
It can also swing too far. A reversed Four sometimes points to careless spending after a long stretch of saving, or to losing track of money. The aim is a looser grip, not an empty hand.
A third reading of the reversed card is about control. Someone may be letting go of a role, a title or a sense of being in charge, and finding it uncomfortable. That discomfort is usually a sign the change is overdue.
Four of Pentacles in love
In love, this card can show possessiveness or a fear of being hurt that keeps a partner at arm's length. One person may be guarding their feelings, their space or their money too closely for real closeness to grow. For a single reader, it may mean holding on to an old relationship or being too guarded to let someone new in.
Reversed, it shows a partner learning to trust, share and relax a little.
Four of Pentacles for career and money
At work, the Four of Pentacles points to a stable position and a cautious approach. You may be protecting your role, keeping your knowledge to yourself or avoiding risk. With money, it describes saving and careful control. That is plain common sense, as long as fear is not stopping you from spending where spending is needed. Reversed, it asks you to review where your money is actually going.
The Four can also show someone who keeps knowledge to themselves at work so they stay needed. It may protect a job in the short term, but it rarely helps a career grow. Sharing what you know is often the better long-term bet.
Is the Four of Pentacles a yes or no card?
The Four of Pentacles is a cautious yes for questions about keeping or protecting something, and a no for questions about change, risk or opening up. Reversed, yes, if you are willing to let go a little.
In a spread, the Four often explains why things feel stuck. If the cards around it show movement and opportunity, it suggests your own grip is the thing slowing them down.
How to work with the Four of Pentacles
This card asks you to hold things with a steady but open hand.
- Give one thing away. Pick something you do not need and pass it on. Notice how it feels.
- Learn what each symbol of plenty means. Fehu, the rune of wealth, is about wealth that moves, not wealth that sits.
- Practice gratitude. Gratitude magic in the waning gibbous moon pairs thanks with gentle release.
- Look at the fear. If the grip comes from old scarcity, shadow work can help you see where it started.
- Wear a pentacle as a reminder. A moon phase pentacle necklace pairs the earth star with the moon's cycle of filling and emptying. The full pentacle and pentagram collection has more.
The tarot page on this site pairs the Four of Pentacles with the abundance and prosperity collection, as a reminder that abundance is meant to flow.
