The Hermit Tarot Card Meaning: Solitude, Inner Light and Wisdom
Share
The Hermit is card IX of the Major Arcana. An old man in a grey cloak stands alone on a mountain top at night, holding up a lantern. He is not lost, and he is not sad. He has walked away from the noise on purpose, because some answers only show up in quiet.
Below you will find what is on the card, the upright and reversed meanings, The Hermit in love, career and money, how to read it as a yes or no, and practical ways to work with it when it turns up.

What is on The Hermit card
In the 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith deck, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith, a white-bearded man in a long grey hooded cloak stands on a snowy peak against a dark sky. In his right hand he raises a lantern, and inside it shines a six-pointed star. In his left hand he holds a tall wooden staff. His head is bowed and his eyes are lowered, as if he is looking down the path for someone climbing after him.
- The lantern is inner light: what you know when you stop listening to everyone else. It only lights the next few steps, not the whole road.
- The six-pointed star inside it is often read as the meeting of above and below, the same idea as "as above, so below".
- The staff is experience. He has walked a long way to get here, and he leans on what he learned.
- The snowy peak is the height he has reached, and the cold, plain isolation that comes with it.
- The grey cloak lets him blend in. He has nothing to prove to anyone.
The Hermit is linked to Virgo and to the element of earth. In the Golden Dawn system it carries the Hebrew letter Yod, the small flame-shaped letter that begins the divine name.
The Hermit upright meaning
Candles for quiet hours
Upright, The Hermit asks you to step back. Not forever, and not out of hurt, but long enough to hear yourself think. It often turns up when you have been asking other people for answers, reading every opinion online, or keeping busy so you do not have to face a question.
The card says the answer is already within reach, and solitude is how you get to it. A few quiet evenings with a candle and a journal will often show you what a dozen conversations could not. The Hermit can also mean a teacher or mentor: someone who has been where you are and holds the lantern up so you can see the path.
Keywords: solitude, reflection, inner light, wisdom, introspection, guidance.
The Hermit reversed meaning
Reversed, The Hermit usually warns that healthy solitude has turned into loneliness. You may have pulled away from people for too long, or you may be hiding rather than resting. The card's advice is simple: reach out to one person who understands you.
Some readers also see the reversed Hermit as a teacher you have outgrown, or advice you keep following long after it stopped fitting. The lantern belongs to him, not to you. At some point you have to carry your own.
It can also show the opposite problem. You may be avoiding time alone because you do not want to hear what you would think in the quiet. If you cannot sit still for ten minutes without your phone, the reversed Hermit is pointing at that.
The Hermit in love
In a love reading, The Hermit is not a card of whirlwind romance. If you are single, it often means a period of being on your own that is doing you good, a time to learn what you want before you look for it. It can also describe a partner who is quiet, thoughtful and slow to open up.
In a relationship, The Hermit can mean one or both of you need more space, and that is not a bad sign in itself. Couples who give each other room often come back closer. Reversed, look for real distance: a partner who has withdrawn emotionally, or a silence that has gone on too long.
The Hermit for career and money
At work, The Hermit favours deep, focused effort over networking and noise. It suits research, writing, study or any task you do best with the door closed. It can also mean questioning whether your work still matches what you care about, and taking time to think before you decide.
If you have been offered a promotion that means more meetings and less of the work you actually like, The Hermit asks you to be honest about what you would be giving up. Visibility is not always the same as progress.
With money, The Hermit is careful and plain. It suggests reviewing your finances privately, cutting what you do not need and ignoring the pressure to keep up with anyone else. Reversed, check that you are not avoiding a money problem by refusing to look at it.
Is The Hermit a yes or no card?
The Hermit is a not yet. It rarely gives a firm yes, because it asks you to think before you act. If you are asking whether to rush into something, the answer is to wait and reflect first. If you are asking whether you need time alone, the answer is yes.
How to work with The Hermit
The Hermit is a good card for anyone who practises alone, which is most witches at some point.
- Light one candle and sit with a question. No phone, no music. Our candle magic guide covers the basics, and a moon phase candle suits this kind of quiet work.
- Keep a journal through one moon cycle. Moon phase journaling gives the practice a simple shape.
- Use the dark moon. The days before the new moon are made for retreat and reflection; see dark moon vs new moon.
- Build an evening routine. Short wind-down rituals give you a daily Hermit hour.
The tarot page on this site pairs The Hermit with the ritual candles collection. A single flame in a dark room is about as close to the lantern on this card as you can get.
