With Practical Magic 2 in cinemas since 11 September 2026, the Owens house is back on everyone's mood board. It never really left. For nearly thirty years the 1998 film has been the October rewatch for a certain kind of person, and the house is a large part of why: a white Victorian on a sea bluff, full of drying herbs, candle stubs, old wood and women who are not especially interested in explaining themselves.
The funny part is that the house barely existed. The exterior was a shell built for the shoot on a bluff on San Juan Island, Washington, looking over Haro Strait, and it was taken down when filming finished. The interiors were sets built on soundstages in Los Angeles. What people are trying to recreate is a mood assembled by a production designer, which is good news, because a mood can be copied in any house.

Plants that are used, not displayed
Herbs hanging to dry, pots on every sill, a glasshouse that is plainly a working space. The Owens women grow things because they need them. The fastest way to get the look is to buy one bunch of lavender or rosemary and hang it upside down in the kitchen, then keep doing that.
Wood that has been lived on
Dark, scuffed, mismatched. A long table with chairs that do not match is closer to the film than any matched set.
Glass
Jars, bottles, a window full of coloured light. Old apothecary shapes carry the look more than any single witchy symbol does.
Candlelight at the wrong time of day
The house is lit by candles even when it does not need to be. That is the whole point.
Very little obvious witchcraft
This is the part most copies get wrong. There are no pentacle rugs in the Owens house. The magic is implied by the herbs, the moon through the window and the women, not announced by the furniture.

A dark cloth, candles at different heights, a bowl of whatever is in season. The Owens table is set for a crowd and cleared for spellwork, sometimes on the same night. The look in one weekend, on a small budget
Saturday morning
Buy herbs at a farmers market: rosemary, lavender, sage, eucalyptus. Tie them in small bunches and hang them from a curtain rail or a row of hooks in the kitchen. Collect every glass jar in the house, peel the labels, and fill them with dry goods on an open shelf.
Saturday afternoon
Put a dark cloth on the table and move every candle you own onto a single tray at its centre. Take down one bright, new-looking thing from each room. The Owens look is as much about what is missing as what is there.
Sunday
Pot three herbs for the sunniest sill, hang one piece of coloured glass in the window, and swap the brightest bulb in the living room for a warm one. Then light the candles at four in the afternoon for no reason. That last step is the one people skip, and it is the one that makes the house feel like the film.
