Seven of Swords Tarot Card Meaning: Strategy, Secrets and Who to Trust

The Seven of Swords shows a man sneaking away from a military camp with an armful of swords. He walks on his toes, looks back over his shoulder, and seems rather pleased with himself. Two swords are left standing in the ground behind him. It is one of the few cards in the deck with a sense of humor, and also one of the most uneasy.

The card is about strategy and secrecy. Sometimes that means clever planning. Sometimes it means deception, by you or by someone near you. The task is to work out which. This guide covers the imagery, upright and reversed meanings, love, work and money, the yes or no answer and some practical ways to handle a situation where not everything is in the open.

Seven of Swords tarot card from the 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith deck, a man tiptoeing away from a camp of tents carrying five swords while two remain in the ground

What is on the Seven of Swords card

In the 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith deck, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith, a man in a red cap and boots steps quickly away from a cluster of colorful tents. He holds five swords by their blades, bundled in his arms. Two more swords stand upright in the ground behind him. He looks back toward the camp, where a few small figures stand in the distance. The sky is a flat yellow. Waite described him simply as a man carrying away five swords rapidly, with a camp close at hand.

  • The man on tiptoe is acting in secret. He does not want to be seen.
  • The five swords are what he is taking: ideas, advantages, information or simply things that are not his.
  • The two swords left behind show that the plan is incomplete. He could not carry everything.
  • The look over his shoulder is part confidence, part worry about being caught.
  • The camp and the distant figures are the people who do not yet know what has happened.

In the Golden Dawn system the Seven of Swords is the Moon in Aquarius. The Moon rules what is hidden and changeable; Aquarius likes to go its own way. Together they describe an independent plan carried out quietly.

Seven of Swords upright meaning

Upright, the Seven of Swords asks you to move strategically and watch who you trust. Not everything is out in the open. Someone may be keeping information back, taking credit for your work, or acting behind your back. It may also be you: cutting a corner, keeping a secret, or telling a convenient half-truth.

The card is not always about wrongdoing. Sometimes strategy is exactly what a situation needs. Keeping your plans quiet until they are ready, choosing your timing, or working around a system that is not fair can all be sensible. The question the card raises is whether the secrecy serves something good or only covers something you would not want seen.

Notice too that the plan is only half finished. Two swords are still in the ground, and the people in the camp are close enough to look up at any moment. Secrets tend to be less secure than the person keeping them believes.

Sevens in tarot are about testing and assessment. In the suit of Swords, the test is mental and moral: how far will cleverness carry you before it costs you trust?

Keywords: strategy, secrecy, deception, cunning, going it alone, getting away with something.

Seven of Swords reversed meaning

Reversed, the secret is coming to light. A lie unravels, a hidden plan is discovered, or someone confesses. If you are the one with the secret, the card says honesty is the easier road now. Coming clean on your own terms is better than being found out.

The reversed Seven can also point to a conscience at work: you are tired of keeping track of what you said to whom, and ready to drop the act. In some readings, it shows something lost or taken being returned. And it can describe self-deception ending, as you finally admit something to yourself.

Seven of Swords in love

In love, this card often raises questions of trust. It can point to secrecy, mixed signals, or someone who is not fully honest about their feelings or intentions. Read it with the surrounding cards before you assume infidelity. It may simply be someone keeping their guard up.

For a single reader, it can warn against playing games, or against a person who does. Reversed, it shows the truth coming out, which is usually painful but clarifying.

Seven of Swords for career and money

At work, the Seven of Swords can mean office politics, someone taking credit for your ideas, or a colleague with a hidden agenda. Keep records, protect your work and be careful what you share. It can also favor a smart, independent strategy, as long as it is honest.

With money, it warns against schemes that look too clever and against anyone who is vague about where money is going. Read the fine print. Reversed, hidden costs or dishonesty come to light.

Is the Seven of Swords a yes or no card?

The Seven of Swords is usually a no, or "not until you know the whole story". Reversed, the truth comes out, and the answer becomes clearer.

How to work with the Seven of Swords

This card asks for sharp eyes and a clean conscience.

  • Check your own swords. Before you suspect others, ask yourself if you are holding anything that is not yours to keep.
  • Keep good records. At work and with money, written facts protect you better than memory.
  • Learn from the ravens. Odin's ravens Thought and Memory gathered what was hidden; see Huginn and Muninn and raven and crow symbolism.
  • Ward against deception. A simple daily ward from protection spells that actually work helps you stay alert without feeling paranoid.
  • Keep a watchful symbol near you. A moon and dark crow necklace suits a card that is all about watching.

The tarot page on this site pairs the Seven of Swords with the raven and crow collection. Clever, watchful and hard to fool, the raven is a natural match.
