A white owl sits with its eyes shut and its head tucked slightly down, perched on a snow-covered branch. Behind it a gold crescent moon hangs in a deep navy sky flecked with falling snow, and pale pines rise on both sides in stacked layers. The chest feathers are laid in rows like scales. Below the branch there are snow-caked boughs, a few rust-brown oak leaves and a stone ledge, and the border is a rough frame of birch logs.

The layered pines, the drifted snow and the pitted gold moon are printed to look like cut and stacked paper. The sheet underneath is flat, and the whole thing hangs off a single nail.

This is a Yule and midwinter piece: a mantel above the stockings, a guest room, a cabin hallway. It stays right through January once the pumpkins are gone, and it makes a safe gift for a bird person who does not want anything gothic in the house.
