Roses the same white as the bird.

An owl faces out from the middle of the panel, round-headed, dark eyes set wide, one foot wrapped round a pale branch. The breast is drawn in fine stippled lines, the folded wing in rows of long overlapping feathers, each one given its own edge and shadow. From beak to tail the bird is a single soft white.

Roses and peonies in the same white open all around him, layered thick along the lower edge and again in the upper right, with smaller sprigs and buds filling the gaps. The background is a deeper cream, hollowed out behind the bird so he seems to sit in a niche. All of that carved depth lives in the artwork, not the metal.

It hangs portrait and works best where the light moves during the day, near a window or in a stairwell. A calm, colourless piece for someone whose rooms are already neutral and who keeps the owl as their familiar.
