A snowy owl sits front and center with his ear tufts raised, body turned slightly left, one foot closed round a pale branch. Wings, breast and face are all worked in the same cream white, the folded wing flecked with small black bars, the facial disc drawn in fine ruffled lines. Two amber eyes are the only colour anywhere on the panel.

Behind and around him, white chrysanthemums cluster along branching stems and fill both upper corners, with more crowding the lower edge. The ground is cool blue grey with white specks falling across it like snow. The whole scene reads as sheets of cut paper laid over one another, each petal given its own shadow, and that depth is printed rather than moulded.

It hangs portrait and suits a pale wall, a bedroom or a landing, and it carries winter without turning into Christmas decor. Snowy owls turn up as messengers in plenty of folk traditions, which makes it a straightforward gift for a bird person.
