SPIRITS AND SHADOWS fills the plate in copper-silver capitals, and under it, in smaller letters, DARE TO ENTER. Along the top a winged skull spreads bats out to both edges. A pointed hat leans into the top left corner, a small round pot into the right.

Two tall potion bottles stand at the sides with smoke curling off their necks and a broom propped against each; a third broom lies flat across the middle, dividing the two lines of type. The ground is deep brown-black and the whole rectangle is edged in heavy printed rust, with corner holes ready for screws or wire. Everything that looks struck into the metal is printed onto a flat panel.

It reads best somewhere people have to walk past — a hallway, a stairwell, the door of a room you would rather keep to yourself. Hang it out for Samhain and leave it up all year if the house takes it. A good gift for someone whose humour runs dry and slightly threatening.
