A cameo of the late gentleman.
Built like a Victorian portrait medallion, then given the wrong sitter. A thick oval frame of pierced scrollwork runs all the way round, leaves rolling over each other, with a taller flourish at the top and bottom. Inside sits a plain dished oval, sanded flat so the profile on it has somewhere quiet to sit.
The figure on it faces left in profile: a skull under a tall top hat with a ribbed band, a high stiff collar at the throat, and the shoulder of a coat cut off at the edge of the oval. Only the head and shoulder appear, exactly as a mourning cameo would be composed. Matte black throughout, frame and figure alike.
Hang it in a hallway or above a writing desk, ideally in a row with real old photographs so people take a second look. A gift for anyone with a taste for Victoriana and funeral etiquette.
