Star charts behind a horned owl.

A great horned owl fills the lower right, feathers in brown and dusty violet, a blue cabochon set into the crown of its head and two yellow eyes fixed straight ahead. Beside it a gold crescent moon carries a face in profile, the curve loaded with scrollwork and studded with purple and blue stones.

Behind them both hangs a teal astrolabe dial: concentric rings, hairline degree marks, a compass rose at the centre, floating in a night sky flecked with eight-pointed gold stars. The outer band is gold filigree set with more cabochons and small star medallions. It is designed to look like enamelled and jewelled metalwork, but it is printed onto a flat aluminium disc light enough for a single nail.

Hang it over a desk where charts and ephemerides actually get used, or in a hallway that takes blue well. It suits Yule and the long nights either side of it, and it makes a good gift for an astrologer or anyone who plans by the moon.
