Charcoal grey ground with a faint repeat of small pumpkins and cat faces in it. The picture runs around the drop: three young witches in tall buckled hats and long coats stand side by side, each cupping a small steaming cauldron in both hands, skirts in purple, green and grey, hair loose under the brims.
Behind them the room fills in. An arched window with the moon in it, shelves of stacked leather books, cobwebs strung across the corners, a black cat curled on a pile of volumes, and one lit jack-o'-lantern sitting at their feet, throwing orange up onto the nearest skirt.
The grey is dark enough for candlelight and calm enough to leave down after Halloween. Set it for a book club that meets after dark, a tea with the tarot deck out, or as a gift for the reader whose to-be-read pile has quietly taken over its own piece of furniture.
