Gothic Style Bat Carved Wall Plaque For Dark Halloween Witch Home Wall Decoration

A bat sat for a portrait.

The frame does most of the talking: a tall oval of pierced baroque scrollwork, leaves and volutes breaking outward all the way round, with a crest at the top and a matching flourish at the foot. Inside, a plain dished oval, finely ridged across its face so it catches light the way brushed metal does.

Centred on it is a bat, head on, wings opened wide and membranes ribbed, ears pricked, mouth slightly open. It is the only figure on the panel and it sits proud of the field, so the wings cast a shadow onto the oval behind them. Everything is one matte black, frame and creature both.

Hang it in a hallway or a stairwell where people pass close enough to catch the detail. It sits happily in a gallery wall of old portraits, and it is an easy gift for the friend whose whole flat is already black. Up in October, still up in March.
