The bat crowns the arch.

An arched niche with a solid back, so anything stood inside it is framed against black rather than against your wall. Slim columns run up both sides, the arch above them is banded with a row of small studs, and the back panel carries a faint pointed shape moulded into it, like a window seen through fog.

Sitting on the crown is the reason to buy it: a bat with its wings opened right across the top of the arch, membranes ribbed, ear tips up, a small blunt skull-like face between them. Below, a stepped ledge runs the full width and projects far enough to hold a tealight or a short figure. Matte black throughout, with a fixing hole in the back panel.

A good spot for one candle beside a bed, or a single crystal kept up out of the dust. It earns its place at Samhain and then keeps it through the winter.
