Painted in washed greys, dusty blue and pale rose, closer to a picture book than a Halloween print. A line of very tall, very thin witches stands along the border in long ruffled gowns and heavy boots, several under wide crooked pointed hats, one crowned with pale flowers, two holding open parasols against nothing in particular.
Around their feet sit black cats, small grey cats, carved pumpkins and loose clusters of painted blooms. Behind them a grey castle skyline goes up in spires and bare branches, ravens circling above, and the whole row repeats upside down in a shallow band of water along the bottom edge.
The muted palette means it does not shout, so it can stay on the table well past Halloween and read as gothic rather than seasonal. Nothing on it is orange. A good gift for the friend whose taste runs to Gorey illustrations, spindly silhouettes and dusty pink in place of orange.
