This one is open right through. A lancet arch in matte black, flanked by two square turrets capped with tiny spires, each turret carrying a rosette set in a plain panel. The gable above steps up in blocks like a battlement, and a pierced quatrefoil sits in the space beneath the peak.

Across the bottom runs a shallow ledge with a row of triangular dogtooth cuts along its face. There is no back panel, so whatever colour your wall is becomes the background: bare plaster, deep green paint, dark wallpaper. Seen side on, the turrets and the ledge stand well clear of the surface.

Hang it over a dresser and let the ledge hold one taper, one small bottle, one crystal. It works as a frame around something already on the wall too, an old photograph or a pressed specimen, and it earns its keep long after October.
