A tawny owl with hard orange eyes sits on a weathered stone disc, one foot planted on the crown of a skull. Its barred brown plumage runs down into a long tail that crosses the lower right of the panel.
The rest fills with oak and maple leaves in rust, tan and dry gold, two pine cones tucked in at the sides, berries on thin stems, and bare branches crawling across the grey stone behind. The skull is cracked and chalky rather than white. Everything is drawn with deep shade in the undercuts so the leaves look stacked on top of each other, though the panel itself has no depth at all. Fine cracks run through the stone field behind, adding to the salvaged look.
This is a Samhain and harvest piece more than a year-round one, though the browns keep working through November. Hang it on a porch under cover, on a garden fence, or on a door beside a bowl of acorns. Good for a birder with gothic leanings.
