A mandala grew around the trunk.

The tree fills the square edge to edge. Its trunk is braided rope-thick, the roots spread out and curl into spirals, and the canopy changes colour as your eye travels across it: cool blue and green leaves on the left, gold and apricot through the middle, deep red and pink on the right. Two pools of yellow light glow low in the branches, as though sunrise were caught on both sides of the trunk at once. Behind all of it sits a dense mandala border of leaves, blossoms and swirls in indigo, moss and rust.

Bright enough to carry a bare table on its own, so it works as a reading surface one evening and a small tablecloth the next. Folded, it packs down for a class or a circle away from home.
