A black cat fills the middle of the panel, facing front, wearing a pointed hat with a curled tip and a wide orange band buckled at the front. The eyes are large and yellow with narrow pupils, whiskers spread white on both sides, and the fur is painted in soft strokes rather than worked into relief.

Behind him a full moon rises through cloud, a black pine forest runs along the bottom edge, and two bats cross the sky to either side. Orange pumpkins sit at both shoulders. The line lands across the lower third: HELLO in a loose script, then DARKNESS MY OLD FRIEND in tall condensed capitals with a chipped, mottled finish over the letters.

This is the outward-facing one. It goes on a covered porch, a garden fence, a shed door, the wall by the back steps. Put it out in early October and it earns its place through Samhain and the dark half that follows. A good gift for the friend who answers the door in a hat and means the joke completely sincerely.
