A great horned owl grips a bare branch dead centre, wings folded, ear tufts raised, one orange eye half-lidded in a permanent glare. Behind it hangs a large pale moon with a shell-like sheen, ringed by thin winter branches on a sky that shifts from lilac to slate blue. The outer border is bark-brown and twisted, like woven roots. The branch runs the full width of the disc and the bird takes up most of the height.
Bird, branch and border are printed to look like carved wood relief - each feather edged with its own shadow, the moon given a soft mother-of-pearl glaze. On the wall it is a flat, light panel.
Hangs well in an entryway, a stairwell, or above a desk. The palette is cool and low-key enough to work outside October. A reasonable gift for a birder, or for anyone who keeps the owl as a symbol of night sight and of Athena. It hangs from a single hole at the top edge.
