A woman fills most of the disc, turned three-quarters away with her chin lifted. Her hat is enormous and black, the crown scrolled with cut filigree, the brim dipping low over one eye. Long ash-blonde hair falls in heavy curls down her shoulder and across a high black lace collar.

The background is a wall of bare trees, branches interlocking overhead, printed in flat black against a pale teal sky. Down at the lower left that sky warms to amber where a low sun is going. The picture is built in stacked layers with hard shadows between them, the look of cut and glued card, and the outer border is black scrollwork in the same style. Nothing actually stands proud of the surface; the disc is flat aluminium.
