A hooded figure stands in front of a weathered plank door, one hand closed around a gnarled wooden staff, the crown of a wide pointed hat pulled low over a face you never quite see. Long ropes of hair fall to the chest and the robe puddles on the ground. Bramble and dead ivy climb the stone arch on both sides and spill across the top of the panel. Everything here is worked in the same charcoal grey, so the whole picture reads by shadow alone.

The scene is printed to look like a deep-cut stone relief, with the folds of the robe catching a light that is not really there. Turned at an angle the panel is dead flat and weighs almost nothing.

It suits a hallway or a stairwell where the light is already low, next to the coat hooks or above a reading chair. Good for anyone building a grey, monastic corner rather than an orange one, and it stays up long after October.
