A raven grips the arm of a stone cross, wings folded tight, long tail trailing down the shaft, head turned to watch something off to the left, beak parted a fraction as if it has just made a sound. Each feather is picked out in slate and blue-grey. The cross itself carries knotwork sunk into both arms, and the panel behind is cracked stone in violet, ochre and green shadow.
Copper vines wander over the whole surface, dropping rust and purple maple leaves along the bottom. Nothing in the palette gets brighter than old copper. The chiselled stone and the depth of the plumage are printed to look like carved relief; the panel itself is flat and light.
