The frame narrows to a point.

An upright cartouche shaped like a stretched oval, drawn to a point top and bottom and scalloped along both sides. The border is thick baroque scrollwork, C-scrolls rolling over each other, with a crest of leaves above and a cluster of open roses gathered at the foot.

Inside, a skull sits in high relief, tilted a little back so the crown takes most of the light. The sockets are deep, the nasal opening sharp, the upper teeth clearly cut, and small scrolled leaves press in against the temples on both sides. All one matte black, with fine tooling lines running over the bone, so the whole thing is read by its shadows.

Narrow and tall, which makes it easy to place: between two windows, on a chimney breast, or in a run with mirrors and framed prints. A memento mori piece rather than a costume one, and it can stay up all year.
