This cross is cut from something browner — bronze-olive stone, its ring and shaft packed with tight knotwork and a small rosette at the crossing. It stands against a wall of cracked teal plaster, and the crack lines run right up behind it.
What makes it is the growth. Yellow-green lichen has crusted along the top of each arm and down one side of the shaft, thick as a beard. Green leaves sit in the upper corners, and along the bottom is a low bank of moss, dried twigs and round mossy heads, some crusted with the same yellow lichen. A bare tendril curls up the right side of the shaft. All that overgrown texture is printed onto a flat panel, so it stays smooth to the touch.
Good for a north-facing room, a stairwell, or beside a window where real ferns already grow. The teal keeps it cooler than most stone-look pieces, so it sits well next to blue or grey walls. A gift for someone who likes old churchyards more than churches.
